Beneath the Hong Kong skyline, a silent giant hums. This is the Kai Tak District Cooling System North Plant. It’s an innovative marvel. It helps cool Hong Kong’s bustling buildings. The Kai Tak District Cooling System was a government initiative. It sought a greener way to combat the city’s humid summers. Construction began in 2011. Operations started in 2013. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department owns and regulates the system. A joint venture operates it, with Veolia playing a key role. The North Plant, situated in Kowloon Bay, works in tandem with the South Plant. The South Plant and its seawater pumphouse are located underground on the waterfront. The system uses seawater for heat rejection. The warmed water is then discharged back into the harbor. The chilled water travels through a three-pipe system. This network has a supply and return line. There is also a standby line for maintenance or emergencies. Currently, the system serves ten buildings. The Kai Tak District Cooling System is not yet complete. The final phase is projected for 2025. By then, the system will service over 40 buildings. It will cool 1.73 million square meters of floor space via a 40-kilometer pipe network. Its capacity will reach an impressive 83,000 tons. The system is expected to save 85 million kWh annually. The Kai Tak District Cooling System stands as a testament to sustainable engineering. It provides a refreshing solution. It helps Hong Kong’s buildings stay cool and lessen their environmental impact.
