“Rooster Ridge” they call it. Kai Pak Ling is a less-frequented hike in Hong Kong. It offers a unique blend of rural serenity and distant cityscapes. Forget the crowded coastal paths. Here, we trade sea breezes for panoramic views.
Kai Pak Ling hike reveals a different side of Hong Kong. It showcases quaint village homes nestled against the backdrop of Shenzhen’s skyscrapers. The contrast is striking. Lush greenery meets a wall of urban development.
Did you know that “Kai Kung Leng” translates to “Rooster Ridge?” The open sections of the trail make you feel like you’re trekking through a grassy field. A vibrant carpet of green covers much of the mountain.
Photographers love Kai Pak Ling. They capture the stunning sunsets over the fish ponds in the Northwest New Territories. The golden reflections on the water are simply magical.
To get here, we take the MTR to Yuen Long Station. Then hop on the 603 Green Minibus. Tell the driver you want to get off at the start of the Kai Kung Leng hiking trail.
The hike to the TETRA Radio Station takes about 30 to 40 minutes. The path is clear. It’s pretty much impossible to get lost.
From the trail, observe Hong Kong’s rural farm areas. Also observe Shenzhen across the border. Climb the stairs near the tower for even better views.
The climb from the tower to the Kai Kung Leng trigonometrical station takes just over an hour. Expect steep sections. The mountain ridge opens up. The terrain is wonderfully strange. The vibrant green grass contrasts sharply with the brown grass. Eventually you’ll arrive at the trigonometrical station.
It only takes 10 minutes to climb to the peak. It is from here that the long descent begins.
Be warned, the downhill section is brutal. It takes well over an hour. If you have sore knees, bring hiking poles. Follow the sharply declining dusty trail. Be careful of loose rocks and slippery patches.
Once you reach the trees, look for the fork in the road. Take the ribboned path to the right. Head down some stairs. Cross a little water catchment area. Head under a monster yellow pipe. You’ll emerge at Fan Kam Road.
From there, turn right to find the bus stop. You can catch the 77k double-decker bus. Or you can catch the number 18 red minibus back to Yuen Long.
Remember to bring plenty of water. There’s almost no shade on this hike. It’s best to avoid it during the summer heat. Stock up on supplies at Yuen Long MTR Station.
