High above us, Kai Kung Shan watches over this area. Kai Kung Pai is part of a group of hills. One Kai Kung Shan reaches 399 meters. It is located in the Sai Kung District. Another Kai Kung Shan measures 374 meters. It is part of the Kai Kung Leng range. There is also a Kai Kung Shan on southwestern Lantau Island. It sits directly west of Yi O.
Kai Kung Leng is also known as Rooster Ridge. Some call it the Mountain of Chicken. The locals call it Kai Kung Leng in Cantonese. This hike gives expansive views. You can see the New Territories and Shenzhen. On clear days, you can even see Shenzhen from Lo Wu to Nanshan.
The Kai Kung Leng hike has little shade. It is best to wear sunscreen. Bring enough water and snacks. Mountain bikers enjoy Rooster Ridge.
The Rooster Ridge hike is not easy to reach. The views of Shenzhen’s skyline are rare. The views of the New Territories are panoramic. Depending on the season, the hill is brown or green. In humid weather, clouds lower to the summit. Winter is the best time to hike. Summer heat makes it strenuous.
The Rooster Ridge hike is about 7.5 kilometers. It is an intermediate hike. The total ascent is about 572 meters. It takes about 5 hours.
The start is on Fung Kat Heung Road. Take a minibus from Yuen Long Station. Or take a taxi to Fung Kat Heung Road from Yoho Mall. After the minibus, walk straight and keep left. Take the path by the electric pole on the left. The initial trail has wooden planks. Some planks are missing. The initial ascent is gradual. Within minutes, you see Yuen Long.
There is a natural lookout pavilion. It offers views of Kam Tim and Yuen Long. You can see Nam Sang Wai. Deserted fishponds gleam under the sunset. You can see Kai Kung Shan. It is a secondary hill of Kai Kung Leng.
The uphill steps are steep but not too strenuous. You can spot wildflowers. Continue up to a radio station and rocks. Pass the range pole. After small climbs, you reach the hilltop. Rest on the rocks and admire the mountain.
Take a moment to appreciate Kai Kung Pai. Enjoy the unpolluted air. The downhill part is tricky. Make sure your shoes have a good grip. Watch out for loose rocks.
At the first concrete platform, see an abandoned military formation. Further down is a second platform. At the end, cross the bridge to Fan Kam Road.
From Fan Kam Road, take bus 77K to Yuen Long or Sheung Shui. There are bus stops on both sides. You can dine in Yuen Long at Yoho Mall. Or explore cafes in Sheung Shui.
