Locked away within these walls, stories unfold at Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg. This isn’t just a prison. It’s a place where lives intersect, where justice is served, and where history has left its mark. The Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg isn’t new to this city. Its roots trace back to a smaller, older prison nestled near the Landgericht in Ottostraße. That 19th-century building, holding only around 150 inmates, eventually became inadequate. The need for a modern facility led to the construction of this very building, the Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg, on the outskirts of the city. Construction began in the autumn of 1990. The first phase, offering 342 spaces, opened its doors in December 1996. The second phase, adding another 247 spaces, was completed in December 1998. This sprawling 17-hectare site houses not only the main prison, but also a juvenile detention center with 23 spaces and an open prison section with 38 spaces. The Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg serves a vital role in the region’s justice system. It handles pre-trial detention for men from the Würzburg district and women from both Würzburg and Schweinfurt. It also houses convicted female prisoners serving sentences up to two years and male prisoners with sentences up to six years. The inmates come from Würzburg, Schweinfurt, Aschaffenburg, and even Ansbach. Life within these walls isn’t uniform. The Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg offers a variety of housing arrangements. There are around 400 single cells for individual confinement and shared cells for two to four inmates. The prison even has a dedicated women’s section with 83 spaces. Within the imposing walls, you’ll find five accommodation buildings, a gatehouse, an administrative wing, and various workshops. There’s a medical station, a psychiatric ward with 46 spaces, a kitchen, and a laundry facility. The workshops provide opportunities for inmates to learn and work, from metalworking and carpentry to car repair and painting. The Justizvollzugsanstalt Würzburg isn’t just about confinement. It also offers educational and spiritual guidance. There’s a school and even a multi-purpose room that serves as a chapel. A bell, installed in 2007 and paid for through prison workshop profits, rings out from a small bell tower. The echoes of its chime serve as a poignant reminder of the lives held within and the hope for rehabilitation and redemption.
