“What if the walls of Juntoku Shogakko could talk?” they might tell tales of emperors and exiled poets. The story of Juntoku Shogakko is intertwined with Emperor Juntoku himself. Emperor Juntoku reigned in the early 13th century.

Juntoku ascended the throne in 1210. His personal name before that was Morinari-shinnō. He was the third son of Emperor Go-Toba.

Emperor Go-Toba effectively ruled during Juntoku’s reign. Juntoku’s reign was marked by political intrigue. In 1221, Juntoku was forced to abdicate. He had participated in a failed attempt to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. This event is known as the Jōkyū War. After his abdication, Juntoku was exiled to Sado Island. He remained there until his death in 1242.

Even in exile, Emperor Juntoku left a lasting impact. He became known posthumously as Sado-no In. This name reflects his time spent on Sado Island. His official Imperial tomb is located in Kyoto.

Juntoku was a talented poet. Fujiwara no Sadaie, also known as Teika, tutored him. One of Juntoku’s poems was included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. This anthology is still well-known today. The poems form the basis for the card game Uta Karuta. This game remains widely played.

The name Juntoku carries weight. Juntoku’s legacy extends beyond his political life. His contribution to Japanese literature continues to resonate.

Today, Juntoku Shogakko stands as a testament. It reminds us of Emperor Juntoku’s complex history. It connects us to a time of emperors, poets and political upheaval. Consider the weight of history imbued in its very name. The name serves as a constant reminder. It links learning to the past. It bridges the gap between history and the present.
