Established in 1774, the Jüdischer Friedhof Mülheim served as the final resting place for the Jewish community of Mülheim am Rhein, a town that became part of Cologne in 1914. For nearly two centuries, generations found peace and solace within these grounds. As you wander amidst the weathered gravestones, you’ll notice many bear inscriptions dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These silent stones whisper stories of lives lived, traditions upheld, and a community that thrived despite facing adversity. Sadly, the last burial here took place in 1942, a somber echo of the dark years of the Holocaust. Helene Speier-Holstein was laid to rest here, her story a poignant reminder of the countless lives tragically cut short. Today, approximately 160 gravestones remain, each one a testament to a life lived and a connection to a community forever changed.
