How about a story about a lake formed by tension? I am talking about Judarn. This small lake in Bromma hides a history stretching back 11000 years.
Welcome to Judarn. It is a serene lake surrounded by the Judarskogen nature reserve. The name Judarn may come from the old Swedish word “ljuda” that means to sound.
Judarn covers 74000 square metres. Its average depth is 2.7 metres and its deepest point reaches 3.7 metres. The lake holds 180000 cubic metres of water. Judarn gets its water from an area of 0.8 square kilometres. The water stays in the lake for about 11 months before flowing out.
Originally, Judarn fed Lillsjön Lake. Now, it drains into Lake Mälaren. Judarn was once considered one of Stockholm’s cleanest lakes. However, stormwater runoff from a nearby road has increased lead levels. This has led to a bathing ban. But metal content is otherwise low. Phosphorus levels are moderate.
Geologists study the moraines around Judarn. These ridges are even named after Gerhard de Geer. He studied the geological features here. Huge square stones lie scattered about. These stones came from earthquakes caused by melting inland ice.
Judarn supports a variety of plant life. White Waterlily and Common Bladderwort grow in the lake. Along the shores, you can find Narrow Leaf Cattail and Yellow loosestrife.
The lake’s fauna includes Gastropods and dragonflies. Perch and Roach swim in its waters. Someone introduced Mirror Carp and Signal crayfish. Fishing for crayfish is now permitted. The Great Crested Newt used to live here. Stockholm is planning to bring them back. They want to create dams and ponds for their habitat.
The lake is part of the Judarskogen nature reserve. Walks around Judarn are very popular. These walks are organized by Bromma borough. The Society for Nature Conservation also offers tours.
Judarn offers a peaceful escape. It is a place to connect with nature. It is a reminder of the forces that shaped this landscape. From its clear waters to its rich wildlife Judarn is a treasure. A treasure worth protecting.
