How about a monument erected not for war but for peace and loyalty? That is the Jubiläumssäule. It stands tall on Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz. This monument commemorates King Wilhelm I’s 25th year as ruler. It also marks his 60th birthday.

Erected between 1841 and 1846, the Jubiläumssäule is more than just a stone column. It is a symbol of Württemberg’s history and artistry. The Jubiläumssäule’s location is the Schlossplatz. This is known as the city’s most beautiful square. The Jubiläumssäule is flanked by fountains. It faces the Musikpavillon and the Königsbau. The Jubiläumssäule dominates the surrounding buildings.

Let’s break down what makes this Jubiläumssäule so special. The Jubiläumssäule’s total height reaches 32.6 meters. The base is 9 meters high. It features historical scenes in relief. Allegorical figures stand at each corner. Above this base rises an 18.5-meter granite column. Crowning it all is a 5.1-meter statue. This statue represents Concordia. She is the Roman goddess of harmony.

Notice the iron chains around the Jubiläumssäule’s area. Massive granite posts hold them. These chains separate the Jubiläumssäule from the rest of Schlossplatz. The granite blocks forming the Jubiläumssäule came from a quarry. This quarry is near Alpirsbach. Each block weighs about 100 centners.

Two steps lead to the Jubiläumssäule’s base. The base displays reliefs of historical events. The pedestal bears an inscription. It dedicates the monument to King Wilhelm. The inscription recognizes him as a friend of his people. It was erected to celebrate his 25th year of reign.

The base features allegorical figures. These figures symbolize Württemberg’s four estates. These are agriculture, trade, military and arts. Bronze ornaments decorate the base. The ornaments were cast in Wasseralfingen. They show deer heads and oak garlands. These represent Württemberg’s heraldic animals.

The column is topped by a bronze capital. It is adorned with oil tree foliage. Cornucopias linked by laurel garlands emerge from it. The statue of Concordia is a masterpiece by Ludwig von Hofer. Ferdinand von Miller cast it in Munich. Concordia stands on a globe. Four lions surround her. She wears a diadem. The diadem has 64 battlements. These symbolize Württemberg’s 64 administrative districts. In her left hand, she holds a palm branch. It is a symbol of peace. In her right hand, she holds a laurel wreath. It represents victory.

The reliefs on the base depict significant events. One relief shows the estates paying homage to King Wilhelm. Others depict battle scenes from the war against Napoleon. These scenes showcase Württemberg’s military achievements.

The Jubiläumssäule underwent restoration in 2013. The statue of Concordia was removed for repairs. Workers found corrosion damage. The restoration cost around 400,000 euro. Concordia was returned to her place in 2015. The Jubiläumssäule is more than a monument. It is a landmark. It embodies Württemberg’s history. It represents artistic achievement. It stands as a testament to a king’s reign. It also shows the enduring spirit of Stuttgart.
