Can you imagine a building rising from the ashes, not once, but twice? The Josuikaikan Hall stands as a testament to resilience. This building, located near Hitotsubashi University, embodies the spirit of the Josuikai, the university’s alumni association. The Josuikaikan Hall isn’t just a building; it’s a living embodiment of the Josuikai’s history. The association, originally the Koyukai, was founded way back in 1889. Its name changed a few times, finally becoming Josuikai in 1914, a name gifted by Eichi Shibusawa, inspired by ancient Chinese texts. The Josuikaikan Hall itself first opened its doors in 1919, thanks to generous donations from alumni. Tragically, the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 reduced the hall to ashes. But, like a phoenix, it rose again in 1926, rebuilt with the continued support of its members. Even after facing occupation following World War II, the Josuikaikan Hall persevered. The Josuikaikan Hall isn’t merely a venue; it’s a symbol of enduring connection. It serves as a hub for alumni, fostering friendship and collaboration. The association’s mission extends beyond camaraderie. It actively supports Hitotsubashi University, contributes to Japan’s economic and cultural development, and promotes knowledge sharing amongst its members. Through lectures, meetings, and publications, the Josuikaikan Hall buzzes with activity, a vibrant center for intellectual exchange and community building.
