Here, where the Donaukanal splits from the Danube, stands a bridge of both beauty and function: the Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke. The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke isn’t just a crossing. It’s a crucial part of Vienna’s water management system. But first, who was Josef von Schemerl?

He was a respected architect and hydraulic engineer. Joseph Maria Schemerl von Leythenbach, born in 1752, even drafted a Danube regulation project back in 1810. Though his plan wasn’t realized then, his name lives on with this bridge. The bridge got its name in 1907.

Now, about the bridge itself. The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke was constructed between 1894 and 1899. Otto Wagner, a famous architect, designed it. The bridge is part of the Nussdorf weir and lock system. This system controls the flow of Danube water into the Donaukanal. The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke is essential for the weir’s stability. It is a double truss bridge with three main walls. These walls support the water pressure and the bridge’s weight.

Look closely at the bronze lions. These iconic statues are by Rudolf Weyr. Interestingly, Gräf & Stift, a Viennese car factory, adopted these lions as their logo. They gained permission from the city to do so. The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke includes weir sections. These can be lowered into the water when needed. This allows the bridge to regulate the water flow into the Donaukanal that begins here. A nearby lock is available for ships.

The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke has faced challenges. In April 1945, it was damaged during wartime. Like other Donaukanal bridges, it was blown up. A wooden footbridge was built in 1947 as a temporary solution. Repairs took place between 1953 and 1955. A major renovation followed in 1978. Today, the bridge is in excellent condition.

The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke not only carries traffic. It supports the vital function of controlling the Donaukanal’s water levels. The middle truss is closer to the southern truss. This design creates a wider space on the northern side. This northern side serves as the vehicular traffic deck. The narrower southern side houses machinery for the dam and weir system.

There has been confusion about the spelling of the name. Official documents sometimes incorrectly refer to it as Schemmerlbrücke. The bridge mostly lies in the 20th district. This is because the district border runs along the Donaukanal’s western bank. The Josef-von-Schemerl-Brücke stands as a testament to Vienna’s engineering and artistic heritage. It serves as a reminder of Joseph Maria Schemerl von Leythenbach’s contribution to the city. It is more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol of Vienna’s careful balance between nature and urban life.
