Even in tragedy there were calls for compassion. Weeks’ execution was opposed by Trooper Cavazos’ children. They believed in forgiveness over vengeance. They hoped to break the cycle of violence.

Leslie Cavazos-Almagia wrote a letter to the governor. She said that executing Weeks would not bring her father back. Trevor Cavazos echoed his sister’s sentiments. He stated that forgiveness is better than hate.

Trooper Cavazos was also an Army reservist. A fellow reservist remembered him as a great man. He recalled their last meeting just hours before the tragedy.
