Gazing up at Johnston Hill, one might wonder about the stories it holds. Johnston Hill stands proudly in Karori, Wellington. It’s the southern tip of Te Wharangi ridge, connecting to Kilmister Tops and Mt Kaukau. Johnston Hill, part of a significant native ecosystem, stretches from Karori towards Khandallah and Johnsonville Parks. The walk to Johnston Hill’s summit takes about half an hour. From the top, you’ll see stunning views of Wellington Harbour, the Hawkins Hill ridgeline, Makara hills, and even the South Island on a clear day. A track from the summit connects to the Skyline Walkway. Halfway up, side tracks lead to Karori Cemetery and Otari-Wilton’s Bush. For those driving, Fletcher’s Lookout at the end of Hatton Street offers parking amidst lush bush, with views of the Orongorongo Range, Wrights Hill, and Makara Peak. Though the walk is steep in places, it’s worth the effort. Remember to keep dogs on a leash. Johnston Hill carries the name of John Johnston, a Wellingtonian since 1843. He purchased the land from Judge Chapman, the first European owner. In 1942, it officially became a public recreation domain.
