Before becoming John Polanyi Collegiate Institute it was Bathurst Heights Secondary School. Bathurst Heights opened its doors in 1951. It was North York’s second high school. The school flourished for decades. It boasted a cafeteria a theatrical auditorium a swimming pool and even workshops. Students prepared for university in a special lecture hall named Kennedy Hall. However times changed. Enrollment declined. Bathurst Heights closed in 2001.

John Polanyi Collegiate Institute’s story begins later. Students from Sir Sanford Fleming Secondary School moved into the former Bathurst Heights building in 2011. This marked a new chapter for the school. Sir Sanford Fleming itself was built in 1964. Its teams were the Chargers. With the move the school’s name was changed to honor John Polanyi. Polanyi a Nobel laureate in Chemistry. The school’s mascot also became the Jaguar its colors blue and black a shift from the previous green and white of Bathurst Heights.
