Built in 1913 the John McKenzie House stands proudly. It’s a testament to a family’s legacy and a community’s history. This three-storey brick structure is more than just a house. It’s a living piece of Willowdale’s past.

The John McKenzie House was the second home of the McKenzie family. They were pioneers in this area. The land itself boasts a history stretching back to 1801. That’s when Jacob Cummer received the deed to lot 18 concession 1 East Yonge Street. Philip McKenzie John’s father bought part of this property in 1884. He was a carpenter and casket maker an English immigrant who built a life here.

Initially the McKenzies lived in the old Cummer farmhouse. This was a Georgian style brick dwelling built around 1840. It stood between Parkview and Norton Avenues. John McKenzie took over the farm after his father passed away. He raised Holstein cattle. He continued this until the farming economy in the area declined. John then had a brilliant idea. He subdivided his family’s farm. In 1912 he registered the Empress Subdivision. This transformed the rural village into the suburban community we know today as east Willowdale.

The John McKenzie House itself is quite remarkable. Its architectural style is a delightful blend of Queen Anne Revival Arts and Crafts and Edwardian influences. It boasts twelve rooms and three bathrooms. A grand L-shaped wrap-around verandah adds to its charm. It features stylized Doric columns. The attached coach house originally used to accommodate automobiles. It now houses the Ontario Historical Society’s reference library.

Inside the John McKenzie House are beautiful features. These include a centre hall plan a vestibule door with leaded glass. There’s also a stunning large leaded art glass window lighting the main staircase. Two sunrooms add extra light and space. Panelled doors wainscotting hardwood floors and radiators complete the picture. The Ontario Historical Society has worked tirelessly restoring and maintaining this significant property. They have partnered with the City of Toronto. The house milk house stable and coach house are all designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The John McKenzie House is not just a beautiful building. It’s a vital part of Toronto’s history. Its restoration is a testament to the dedication of the Ontario Historical Society. It serves as a reminder of the area’s transformation from a rural setting to a thriving suburb. Today you can visit the John McKenzie House and step back in time. You can experience the rich history and architectural beauty for yourself.
