Initially the school opened to relieve Freedom High School. Overcrowding was the problem. Future development in Dulles South needed to be accommodated. The first year saw only 609 students. There was no senior class then. Since then John Champe High School has more than tripled in size.
A temporary change occurred in the 2018-2019 school year. Willard Intermediate School served 8th and 9th graders. John Champe High School served 10th through 12th graders. Lightridge High School’s opening in 2020 ended this system.
The student body is diverse. As of 2022-2023 it was 51.5% male. It was 48.4% female. Racial demographics included 43.3% Asian. Also 29.6% White. There were 11.4% Black students. Hispanic students made up 9.8%. Multi-racial students were 5.4%. Other races accounted for 0.5%.
