“Hidden gem” doesn’t even begin to describe the Johannesgrotte. This short walk in Eisenstadt leads you to a romantic natural cave. Imagine stumbling upon this serene spot.
The Johannesgrotte is located near Eisenstadt. Eisenstadt sits at the foot of the Leithagebirge hills. The area is perfect for hikes through the wooded region. Many well-marked trails wind through the Hochwald forest.
Our journey to the Johannesgrotte begins at the Burgenländisches Landhaus on Europaplatz. We will head east along Ing. Hans Sylvester-Straße. Shortly after the Kasernentor, we turn left into Buchgrabenweg. At the end of the road, before the ORF Landesstudio, we turn left again. Then we follow the red markings.
Next, we walk past a meadow to a small bridge. We cross it towards the edge of the forest. At the fork in the path, we keep left. After about 300 meters, we leave the hollow path. It goes steeply up to the left. After another 500 meters on a forest path, we reach the Johannesgrotte.
The hike to the Johannesgrotte is moderately difficult. The highest point is 287 meters. The whole trip will only take about 45 minutes.

Public transport can bring you here. The Neusiedler See area is easy to reach by train. Trains from Switzerland, Germany, and other parts of Austria go to Vienna’s main station. From there, trains go to Neusiedl am See. The trains to Eisenstadt and Sopron also connect there. Bikes are allowed on most trains. Reservations are needed on Railjet, EC/IC, and Nightjet trains. On regional trains, bikes can come along if there is space.
