Nestled in a Tokyo residential area, a mere five-minute stroll from Nakano Sakaue subway station, stands Jissen Gakuen Junior & Senior High School. Jissen Gakuen isn’t just another school. It’s a vibrant hub where over a thousand students, a slightly larger portion being boys, pursue their academic dreams across diverse courses. These courses range from the demanding academic track to the specialized sports program, and even a liberal and science course. Imagine this bustling school in 2019, filled with the energy of Japanese students, soon to embark on a life-changing experience. A group of students from Marlborough, New Zealand, as part of a two-decade-long sister school partnership, arrived at Jissen Gakuen. They were immersed in Japanese culture, participating in classes, forging friendships, and experiencing the unique warmth of Japanese hospitality. The bonds formed were so strong that the farewell at the end of their stay was a two-hour tearful affair. The partnership wasn’t just one-way. Jissen Gakuen also offers scholarships to its students, enabling them to travel to Marlborough and experience Kiwi life. This exchange fosters global understanding and leadership skills. Now, let’s shift our focus to a unique architectural marvel within Jissen Gakuen. This is the Freedom Learning Manor House, completed in 2011. Architect Furuya Nobuaki and NASCA ingeniously designed this structure to maximize the limited space. They created a “place of margins,” a free-study center tucked away amidst the classrooms and corridors. This innovative space serves not only as a quiet study area but also as a hall for extracurricular activities, like the chorus club. The Manor House features an intriguing design. An inner shell sits semi-underground, while the outer shell interacts with the environment, playing with sunlight and sightlines. Between these shells, a dynamic gap emerges, creating a sense of being enveloped by the surroundings. Glimpses of the sky and treetops peek through openings, offering a connection to nature. This design encourages both focused study and spontaneous interaction among students. The Manor House stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering a dynamic, engaging learning environment. Jissen Gakuen Junior & Senior High School isn’t merely a place of education; it’s a vibrant ecosystem of learning, cultural exchange, and architectural innovation.
