A chilling wind whispers secrets through the trees. We stand before the Jiř́ Hejda Plaque. This unassuming memorial tells a powerful story. A story of a man whose life spanned journalism national economics and ultimately unjust imprisonment.
The Jiř́ Hejda Plaque commemorates a significant figure in Czech history. A multifaceted man Jiř́ Hejda was a journalist a writer and an economist. He worked for prominent newspapers like Přítomnost Tribuna Lidové noviny and České slovo. His expertise extended to national economics. He even held the position of general secretary of the CKD company.
In 1939 he founded his own factory producing kitchen equipment. This factory thrived under his leadership. However Jiř́ Hejda’s life took a dark turn. He actively participated in the anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II. After the war his political involvement continued. He became a prominent member of the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party. He served on the central planning commission.
Fate intervened in 1949. He was arrested by the StB the communist secret police. He was implicated in a political trial with Milada Horáková. He was unjustly convicted to life imprisonment. His assets were confiscated. He lost his civil rights.
His imprisonment spanned years. He endured harsh conditions in prisons like Pankrác Mírov Leopoldov Ilava and Valdice. His resilience was remarkable. After a conditional release in 1962 he found work. He continued writing and produced literary works. His autobiography Žil jsem zbytečně I lived in vain stands as a testament to his experiences.
The original bronze plaque was unveiled in February 1995. It was stolen in 2012. A glass plaque now stands in its place. It bears a slightly altered inscription and a bronze relief. The current plaque which we see here was unveiled in February 2015. The families of Hejda Böhm and Matoušek were instrumental in its restoration.
