What secrets do the towering peaks of the Himalayas hold? Here, at the foot of the majestic mountains, lies Jigme Dorji National Park. Jigme Dorji National Park is a sprawling sanctuary, covering over 1,600 square miles. The park was established in 1974. It honors Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan. Originally, it was Bhutan’s largest national park. This changed in 2008 with the creation of Wangchuck Centennial Park. Jigme Dorji National Park is a testament to Bhutan’s commitment to conservation. It’s a biodiversity hotspot. It boasts a remarkable range of flora and fauna. Within the park’s boundaries, you’ll find everything from lush valleys to sky-piercing Himalayan peaks. This varied terrain supports diverse ecosystems. These range from alpine meadows to warm and cool broadleaf forests. The park is home to several notable peaks. These include Jomolhari, Tóng Shān Jiā Bū Fēng, Teri Kang, Kangphu Kang I, and Masagang. These peaks contribute to the breathtaking scenery. Jigme Dorji National Park shelters a wealth of wildlife. Some of these species are endangered, threatened, or vulnerable. Keep an eye out for the Bengal tiger, Himalayan black bear, and Ussuri dhole. You might also spot a Himalayan goral, bharal, or spotted linsang. The elusive snow leopard and clouded leopard also call this park home. Remarkably, Jigme Dorji National Park is reportedly the only place where Bengal tigers and snow leopards coexist. It’s also the only park in Bhutan where all four national symbols can be found: the cypress tree, raven, blue poppy, and takin. The history of human presence in Jigme Dorji National Park stretches back millennia. The Layap people, a semi-nomadic group, have ancestral ties to this land. Their traditions continue within the park’s boundaries. While Jigme Dorji National Park became a wildlife sanctuary in 1974, it was later upgraded to a national park in 1993. At the same time, its boundaries were reduced as part of a nationwide effort to better manage protected areas. The park offers fantastic trekking opportunities. Popular trails include the Jomolhari Base Camp Trail and the Snowman Trek. These treks let you experience the park’s beauty. You’ll also encounter local communities. This gives you insight into the region’s rich culture. Jigme Dorji National Park is a treasure trove of natural and cultural wonders. Its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife promise an unforgettable journey.
