Did you know that Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church in Huntingtown Maryland boasts a truly unique history? It’s not just a place of worship it’s a story woven into the fabric of a growing community.
Jesus the Divine Word wasn’t always the grand church you see today. It began in 1991. Father Roger Soley a visionary priest received a mission. He was tasked with establishing a new parish in Calvert County Maryland’s fastest-growing area. Father Soley didn’t just build a church. He built a family. He held nineteen home Masses for Catholics in the area. He celebrated the first community Mass at Plum Point Elementary School.
This wasn’t just a building project. It was about bringing people together. In 1994 Jesus the Divine Word officially became a parish. Cardinal James Hickey celebrated the first Mass at the elementary school installing Father Soley as the founding pastor. Imagine the sense of community that must have flourished.
The church’s name is more than a title. It reflects the parish’s core values. The icon depicting Jesus the Divine Word holding a book with words from John’s Gospel “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God” hangs prominently inside. It is a constant reminder of the parish’s dedication to spreading God’s word.
A striking sculpture of the Forgiving Father embracing the Prodigal Son stands outside. This sculpture is a powerful symbol of love forgiveness and acceptance. It was created by Father Harold Buckley a New York priest. The sculpture welcomes visitors even before they enter the church. It is a testament to Father Soley’s vision of a church that embraced everyone.
In 2002 the current church and parish hall opened. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners and the Doran Family Foundation Jesus the Divine Word found a permanent home. Another of Father Buckley’s creations a unique aluminum crucifix hangs above the altar. Jesus is depicted leaning down his arm outstretched. It’s a symbol of Jesus’s closeness to his people.
Today Jesus the Divine Word continues to thrive. Father John Dakes the current pastor highlights the parish’s strong sense of community. Parishioners help each other. They support local causes and even contribute to building schools and homes in Haiti. The church truly embodies the spirit of its name.
