Did you know that the Jesus Christus-Kirche in Cologne has risen from the ashes of war? It stands as a symbol of resilience and rebirth. Let’s step back in time and uncover the fascinating story of this church.

The Jesus Christus-Kirche wasn’t always as you see it today. This church has been rebuilt after being heavily damaged during World War II. Its history is interwoven with Cologne’s own trials.

Originally, the Christuskirche was built between 1891 and 1894. It was the first church in Cologne funded entirely by the local Protestant community. Imagine a grand neo-Gothic hall church. It had over 1200 seats and a towering presence. August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann designed it. Heinrich Wiethase oversaw the construction.

However, the church’s proximity to the Cologne West Station proved disastrous. In 1944, bombings severely damaged the Christuskirche. Only the tower remained.

After the war, architects Hesse and Schulze created a simpler design. In just nine months, they erected a basic hall church. It could seat 520 people. This new Christuskirche opened its doors in 1951. It was Cologne’s first new church after the war. The locals affectionately called it the “Old Lady.” It stood as a solitary structure. The neo-Gothic tower met a plain post-war church.

Over time, the community considered a complete redesign. In 1980, a plan to demolish the church was thankfully stopped. The tower was renovated in the early 1990s.

In 2014, the church was partially torn down again. A smaller church and a residential complex were built. Klaus Hollenbeck Architekten and MAIER ARCHITEKTEN designed this new structure. The new Christuskirche was dedicated in 2016.

The new church space is smaller. The design includes residential and office spaces. These buildings surround a sacred garden offering views of the Stadtgarten. The interior features walls that slope inward. This creates a sense of security. The exterior walls slope outward acting as a welcoming gesture.

The Christuskirche’s tower stands 77 meters high. It is the second tallest church tower in Cologne. At 42 meters up, there is an all-around viewing platform. The clock tower has an open lantern at 60 meters.

Dorothee-Sölle-Platz is located between Herwarthstrasse and Werderstrasse. It was named in memory of Cologne theologian Dorothee Sölle in 2016.

The basement of the Christuskirche also has its own story. Since the 1970s, it was a popular concert venue. The band BAP even formed here. Many famous musicians played here including Joy Division.

The original bronze bells were melted down during World War I. Today, the tower has three cast steel bells from 1923. Their inscriptions reflect the hardships of the post-war era.

The original stained-glass windows were destroyed in the war. Artist David Schnell created new colored windows in 2018.

Today, the Christuskirche continues to be a vital part of Cologne. It is a place of worship. It is a testament to community and architectural innovation. Its story reflects Cologne’s own journey through destruction and renewal. The Christuskirche stands as a symbol of hope and the enduring power of faith.
