Founded in 1899 Jesuit High School in Tampa has a rich history. It began as Sacred Heart College. This was near Florida Avenue and Madison Street. The school was affiliated with Sacred Heart Parish a Jesuit-run parish.

By the mid-1950s Jesuit High School outgrew its downtown location. Father Michael Kennelly SJ stepped up. He led a $600000 fundraising campaign. This impressive effort allowed the purchase of 80 acres. This land was in West Tampa on Himes Avenue. The school moved in 1956. Father Kennelly designed the new campus. St Anthony’s Chapel was its centerpiece.

The new Jesuit High School campus was quite a change. It went from a crowded downtown building to a sprawling campus. The move also reflected the growth of Tampa itself. West Tampa offered more space for expansion. The school’s enrollment was 245 students at the time of its relocation. Today it boasts hundreds more students.

Jesuit High School has achieved academic excellence. It’s known for its college preparatory curriculum. It’s been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The school emphasizes more than academics. The Jesuits encourage students to be Men For Others. This is inspired by a 1973 speech by Jesuit Father General Pedro Arrupe. This philosophy guides the school’s values.

Jesuit High School’s athletic program is also noteworthy. The Tigers have won numerous state championships. They’ve excelled in sports like soccer baseball and swimming. The school’s baseball stadium is considered one of the best in the nation. Their chief rival is Tampa Catholic High School. The rivalry adds excitement to the athletic competitions.

The school offers a wide variety of clubs and activities. Students participate in community service. They contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually. There are many clubs such as the Key Club and the Environmental Club. These clubs support student interests and community engagement.
