The Jenaplanschule Weimar didn’t just appear overnight. It evolved. It began as a small initiative. Weimar teachers sought inspiration after the fall of the Berlin Wall. They explored innovative teaching methods. They visited schools in West Germany. This led to a pivotal visit to the Jenaplan school in Jena.

A teacher’s group formed. They wanted a Jenaplanschule in Weimar. With the city’s support and the ministry’s approval a pilot program launched in 1993. It started small with one group and 16 students. By 2000 it had grown to over 120 children.

The school’s growth continued. It merged with the Christoph Martin Wieland elementary school. This led to major renovations and new construction at the Gropiusstrasse location in 2004. A new gymnasium was also built in 2009.

The Jenaplanschule Weimar became a comprehensive school in 2011. It now offers classes from 1 to 12. The upper secondary school was completed in 2018. The number of students has constantly risen. It even includes international exchange programs. For example they have a partnership with a school in Poznan Poland.

The Jenaplanschule Weimar uses the Jenaplan educational concept. This includes age-mixed classes. Students learn in Stammgruppen. These are groups mixed across three year levels. They have three daily segments: course time Stammgruppen time and all-day activities. These activities are open to all students not just those in after-school care.

The Jenaplanschule Weimar is more than just a school. It’s a community. It reflects the evolution of education in post-reunification Germany. It also represents a commitment to innovative and inclusive teaching. This is a school that continues to grow. This is a school shaping the future of Weimar’s students.
