Did you ever imagine a park transforming before your very eyes? Jefferson Manor Park, right here in Alexandria, Virginia, has done just that. This 14-acre park, nestled in the Franconia District of Fairfax County, has always been a community hub. It boasts a diamond field, basketball court, playground, restroom and shelter facilities, open picnic areas, and a parking lot. Jefferson Manor Park, at 2909 Farmington Drive, has been serving the community for years. But something exciting happened recently. Beginning in July 2024, Jefferson Manor Park embarked on a significant renovation. The focus? Improving accessibility for everyone. The project, funded by the 2020 Bond Program and General County Construction Funds, totaled a whopping $1,300,000. This wasn’t about adding new flashy features. It was about ensuring that Jefferson Manor Park could be enjoyed by people of all abilities. New ADA-accessible trails were constructed, linking all the existing amenities. The restrooms and shelter structures were upgraded. An ADA-compliant parking space was added. And the entrance serving the neighboring community was also made accessible. The construction, handled by TMG Construction, wrapped up by Fall 2024, just in time for everyone to enjoy the improved park. Interestingly, this type of project, focused on meeting federal ADA standards, didn’t require the usual public review process. That’s because ADA access is a federal mandate. So, the design was determined by site constraints and code requirements. The result is a seamless integration of accessibility into the existing fabric of Jefferson Manor Park. So, next time you’re at Jefferson Manor Park, take a moment to appreciate the thought and effort put into making it a truly inclusive space for everyone.
