Järva begravningsplats is located on Järvafältet. This is north of Tensta. It is in the southwest corner of Järvafältet.
The vision for Järva begravningsplats began in 2005. The city planned a new cemetery in northwest Stockholm. The location in Akalla was chosen for its recreational potential. As early as the 1970s, the area was designated as a recreational space. Now many use cemeteries for walks and jogs.
Stockholm needed more burial space. Since the early 2000s, there has been a shortage. Järva begravningsplats aims to be as significant as Skogskyrkogården. Skogskyrkogården serves the southern part of the city.
An international architectural competition took place in 2009. Kristine Jensen Tegnestue and Poul Ingemann won. Their design, called “Öarna” or “The Islands”, features distinct grave areas. These areas resemble islands in a natural landscape.
The Järva begravningsplats has approximately 20000 graves. Around 9000 are coffin graves. There is also a memorial place. The service building and two ceremony buildings serve different needs. The design principle involves separate grave islands. These islands sit within a relatively untouched landscape.
Granholmstoppen lies close to Järva begravningsplats. This man-made hill consists of construction debris. It includes rubble from building the blue subway line. Holger Blom planned a park area. He planned this park with his colleagues at Granholmstoppen.
Järva begravningsplats welcomes all faiths and beliefs. There is a memorial grove. Two ash burial grounds also exist. From May 2025 burials can take place in one of the ash burial grounds. Grave plots with urn graves sit near a wetland. Stone paving frames these plots. Each plot holds nine urns.
Most coffin graves accommodate two coffins. Some are only one coffin deep. Certain grave plots face Mecca. Wooden fences surround several grave areas. These form small islands.
The Järva begravningsplats has arched wooden structures at the entrances. They serve as markers. These markers help visitors navigate.
The construction of Järva begravningsplats took place between 2021 and 2024. The city hopes Järva begravningsplats will appeal to everyone. It does not matter their faith or philosophy. The planners designed it to reflect this inclusivity.
Järva begravningsplats features a ceremony building for up to 100 people. There is also a reflecting pool. These were built during the cemetery’s creation.
Kistgravar at Järva begravningsplats are available to those registered in Stockholm. Other grave types allow anyone to be buried. It does not matter where they were registered.
