Hidden within Prague’s Žižkov district lies Jarov a neighborhood steeped in history. Originally part of Hrdlořezy Jarov’s story begins in the early 20th century. Around 1912-1914 a colony was built near Chmelnice a solitary farmstead. Even today one of the first houses proudly displays the name Jarov. A cinema bearing the same name once stood nearby. Jarov’s growth accelerated in the 1920s. A school was constructed on Na Jarově Street in 1928. It had five classrooms initially. Imagine the children walking to school past the newly built homes. Think of their laughter echoing in the fresh air. Jarov wasn’t merely a residential area. It played a significant role during World War II. In May 1944 fighting took place near Jarov. German forces pushed into the area. Czech and Russian troops repelled the attack. The battle involved the Třebešín transmitter a vital communication point for the resistance. The presence of Vlasovites Russian collaborators further complicates this chapter in Jarov’s history. Their involvement added another layer of complexity to the conflict. Following the war Jarov continued to develop quietly becoming a residential part of Prague. Today Jarov is a peaceful neighborhood. Its past however is rich and eventful. Remember this story when you walk its streets. Feel the echoes of history beneath your feet. Jarov whispers of war and peace of growth and resilience. This quiet corner of Prague has much to tell.
