Did you know Jardim Robru’s name honors a family? This isn’t just any São Paulo neighborhood. Jardim Robru holds a unique story. It began as a former farm. The landowner cleverly named it after his sons Roberto and Bruno. Many old-timers however mistakenly believe the name comes from Ronaldo and Bruno two brothers. This confusion is common. Many lack properly registered documents. Some residents even recall a notary in Osasco revealing difficulties in providing documentation. He cited problems among heirs and his own health issues. He stated that future property registrations would require legal action.

Jardim Robru is officially part of Vila Curuçá district. Many residents however identify with Guaianases district. The official municipal subdivisions don’t always reflect residents’ feelings or history. Even street signs are often ignored. Most people just consider themselves part of São Paulo’s East Zone. Jardim Robru is well-known. Many neighbors even identify as Robru residents.

A bus ride to Jardim Robru reveals typical São Paulo periphery landscapes. Irregular housing and settlements are common sights. Earthy-toned houses contrast with a well-treed square. Elderly people exercise on equipment in this square. Heavy car traffic contrasts with few pedestrians.

A bar owner near the bus stop complains about the square’s lack of nighttime lighting. It increases insecurity and reduces evening business. Small bars and shops are common. Three abandoned football fields could offer safer children’s play areas. A local story tells of an old man guarding the square. He threatens children with a water bottle if they disturb his sleep.

Founded by Northeastern migrants Jardim Robru boasts a vibrant culture. Residents actively participate in community improvement. A man named Raimundo exemplifies this. He arrived in 1973 from Maranhão. He worked various jobs before settling into a warehouse position in Guaianases. He raised his children here. His daughter is a teacher though he is illiterate. His son unfortunately is a drug user.

Raimundo now collects recyclable materials. He earns extra money selling them. He starts at 4 am to prepare for the three days the waste collection truck visits Jardim Robru. He earns 20 to 30 reais. It supplements his retirement pension which isn’t enough. The scrap yard where he sells is next to the bus stop. Other Northeastern migrants work there too. The smell doesn’t bother them. The man who buys from Raimundo describes him as reserved but kind.

Bruna’s story contrasts with Raimundo’s. Bruna is a young woman who loves her neighborhood. She works at the Vila Curuçá Culture Factory. This facility provides cultural programs for young people. Bruna takes singing lessons there. She’s studying pedagogy and wants to specialize in hospital pedagogy. She’s proud to be from the periphery. She and her husband Jonathan live in their own home. They are both active in their evangelical church. Bruna’s history shows that not every poor person’s story needs to be a tale of woe. Her pride in her neighborhood reminds us of the importance of place and community.

Jardim Robru. A neighborhood with a history of struggle and resilience. A place where families build lives and dreams bloom against all odds. It’s a hidden gem in São Paulo’s East Zone a place of stories waiting to be discovered.
