Jaraguá, a name whispered on the winds of time, echoing the ancient Tupi language. It means “Grotto of the Lord”, “Valley Guard”, or perhaps “Lord of the Valley”. Here in the northwest zone of São Paulo, Jaraguá became a district in 1948. Carved from sections of Perus, Pirituba, and Nossa Senhora do Ó, Jaraguá stands as a testament to the ebb and flow of history. It borders the municipalities of Osasco to the west and Caieiras to the north. It also shares boundaries with the districts of Perus, Anhanguera, Brasilândia, São Domingos, and Pirituba. Imagine, in 1968, the Brazilian Telephone Company erected a small building in Jaraguá. It was intended as a telephone center. However, the cost of a phone line was prohibitive. The “expansion plans” managed by Telebrás failed to attract enough subscribers. Jaraguá had to wait until 1984 for automatic telephone service. TELESP finally installed 4,000 terminals with the prefix 841. Now, Jaraguá boasts approximately 89,000 telephone terminals. The Jaraguá Railway Station, a landmark in itself, has a story to tell. The São Paulo Railway Company built it in 1891. Originally named Taipas, or “Parada de Taipas”, it was officially renamed “Jaraguá” in 1940. Fast forward to March 18, 2010. The Jaraguá viaduct opened, albeit with some flaws. Mayor Gilberto Kassab inaugurated this much-delayed project, easing traffic flow across the railway line. Before the viaduct, vehicles would often get stuck at the station gate, waiting for trains to pass. This often led to traffic jams and pedestrian accidents. Within Jaraguá lies a wealth of neighborhoods. The heart of Jaraguá, the center, houses Largo da Matriz and the historic Nossa Sra. da Conceição Church. One of the oldest churches in the region, it stands near the Monastery House of the Japanese Sisters. Nearby, the Jaraguá train station, on Line 7 (Ruby) of the São Paulo Metropolitan Trains, still exhibits its 1891 English architecture. Look closely, and you might spot the district’s first masonry house, now a flower shop. From bustling Cidade D’Abril, with its Saturday street market, to the evolving City Jaraguá, home to the ETEC Jaraguá technical school and the Cantareira Norte Shopping mall, the district pulses with life. Jardim Ipanema, bordered by the Rodovia dos Bandeirantes, and Jardim Pirituba offer convenient access to shops and bus lines. Jardim Rincão provides a gateway to the Rodoanel beltway, while Jardim São João hosts traditional festivities in Praça Dois Corações. Jardim Shangri-La, in the district’s north, and Jardim Vivan, home of the former Telesp building, each contribute to the tapestry of Jaraguá. Parque Nações Unidas boasts the German steel company Voith and the Parque Senhor do Vale. Parque Panamericano, a hub for local commerce, is also home to the infamous “Acherupita” favela. Vila Chica Luiza provides access to Jaraguá State Park and the highest point in São Paulo. Vila Aurora, in the extreme northwest, boasts the CPTM Vila Aurora station. Jaraguá is more than just a district; it is a microcosm of São Paulo itself. From its humble beginnings to its present-day dynamism, Jaraguá continues to evolve, a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
