You see it in the distance – a haven of peace amidst the industrial landscape: the Japanischer Garten. This peaceful oasis, in the heart of Cologne’s Flittard district, is a testament to the passion of a man named Carl Duisberg. A leading figure in the Bayer company, Duisberg was captivated by the beauty of Japanese gardens during a trip to the Far East in 1926. Upon his return, he decided to bring this serene art form to his own backyard. This backyard was no ordinary one, though. It was the expansive grounds of the Bayer industrial complex, now known as Chempark.

The Japanischer Garten opened its doors to the public in the 1950s, becoming a sanctuary for both workers and community members seeking respite from the bustling industrial setting. It was moved to its current location in 1961, within a 15,000 square meter area, blending seamlessly into the picturesque landscape of the Carl-Duisberg-Park. This expansive green space boasts a variety of Japanese flora, including majestic Mammutbäume (Sequoiadendron giganteum), the Japanese maple, and delicate chrysanthemums.

But the garden’s charm lies not only in its plant life. Cobblestone paths meander through the grounds, leading to serene ponds teeming with vibrant Koi carp and ancient turtles. The iconic Mikadobrücke, a bridge inspired by the temple city of Nikkō, gracefully spans one of the ponds, inviting visitors to pause and admire the reflection of the sky in the still water. This beautiful bridge acts as an invisible gateway between the hustle and bustle of Cologne and the tranquil serenity of the Japanischer Garten. The garden is truly a masterpiece of cultural exchange, a harmonious blending of East Asian aesthetics and the European landscape, a place where you can feel transported to another world, even for just a moment.
