The Japanese Sword Museum opened in January 2018. It is operated by The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. The society was founded in 1948. Its goal was to protect the art of Japanese bladesmithing. This was after World War II. Allied forces confiscated many swords. The society first resided in the Tokyo National Museum. Later, it moved to Yoyogi.

The Japanese Sword Museum preserves and displays swords. It is one of the few museums specializing in Japanese swords. Enthusiasts donate works for storage and management. The old museum closed in March 2017. It was located in Yoyogi. The new Japanese Sword Museum opened in January 2018 in Sumida.

Inside the Japanese Sword Museum, you will find about 190 items. These include swords and mountings. Armor and metalworking documents are displayed. Some swords are national treasures. Others are important cultural properties. Masterpieces from the Heian and Kamakura periods are highlights.

Katana, or samurai swords, symbolize worship and authority. They represent the pinnacle of Japanese art. The katana lost its place as modernization began. The samurai age ended.

The museum’s location is 1-12-9 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo. The site area is 2157.9 square meters. The building area is 1076.9 square meters. It has three stories. The building height is 15.6 meters.
