A bronze relief. Intricate details. This is the Jan Svatopluk Presl Sculpture. It stands proudly in Prague’s Vrchlického sady.

The Jan Svatopluk Presl Sculpture isn’t just a statue. It’s a tribute. A tribute to a significant figure in Czech science and literature. Jan Svatopluk Presl was a founder of the National Museum. His work shaped Czech scientific terminology. He even contributed to botanical taxonomy. This sculpture’s location near the museum is no coincidence. It’s a fitting acknowledgement of his legacy.

Created by sculptor Bohumil Kafka and architect Josef Gočár. The sculpture was unveiled on July 1 1910. The Art Nouveau design features an allegorical female figure. A snake and an owl flank her. An open scroll suggests knowledge and learning. Dark vertical stone slabs frame the bronze relief. The dark base holds an inscription. It honors Presl’s contributions to Czech literature and natural sciences. The inscription also notes his birth and death dates.

Originally the sculpture resided in a larger park. This Municipal Great Park. The park featured a pond an island flower beds and even a waterfall. Landscape architect František Thomay designed a major expansion in 1884. He incorporated a flower design based on the city emblem. The Jan Svatopluk Presl Sculpture found its place within this floral pattern. Interestingly the monument was placed in 1916. Ten years after its creation.

Sadly the construction of the metro and the Main Train Station changed the area. The Jan Svatopluk Presl Sculpture became somewhat hidden. Restoration efforts in 2012 brought it back to its former glory. The Gallery of the Capital City of Prague now contemplates a more prominent location for this important piece of Prague’s history. A more visible place where more people could appreciate it.

This Jan Svatopluk Presl Sculpture is more than just bronze and stone. It’s a testament. It’s a legacy. It’s a small yet significant part of Prague’s rich cultural heritage. A reminder of the contributions of Jan Svatopluk Presl. A man who shaped Czech science and literature. A man whose memory lives on.
