On a seemingly ordinary street corner in Prague, a unique memorial spins. It’s not made of marble or bronze, but of a gleaming, silvered street lamp. Atop this lamp, a bicycle wheel also silvered, perpetually turns, pointing towards the heavens. This is the Jan Bouchal Ghost Bike, a memorial unlike any other. It commemorates not just Jan Bouchal, but also serves as a poignant symbol for all cyclists who have lost their lives on Prague’s streets. Jan Bouchal, nicknamed “Pup,” was a man of many passions. He was an environmental journalist, an anti-corruption activist, and a tireless advocate for safer cycling conditions in Prague. He co-founded Auto*Mat, an initiative pushing for reduced car traffic and increased bicycle, pedestrian, and public transport use. Tragically, Jan’s life was cut short at the very intersection where the memorial now stands. On January 6, 2006, he was struck by a car while cycling. He succumbed to his injuries on January 12, leaving behind a partner and a young son. The intersection, known for its dangerous conditions, was a site Jan himself had warned about. He had even dubbed it the “Crossroads of Death” and actively campaigned for its redesign. The city finally undertook the reconstruction in 2012, adding traffic signals for cyclists and calming the traffic flow. The Jan Bouchal Ghost Bike isn’t just a memorial; it’s a work of art, designed by sculptor Krištof Kintera. Originally, temporary memorials, including a white “ghost bike,” marked the spot. However, through public donations and support, Kintera’s “Bike to Heaven” design became a reality. The existing streetlamp was chosen as the base, a “silent witness” to the tragedy. The spinning bicycle wheel symbolizes Jan’s spirit and serves as a constant reminder of the need for safer streets. The silver coating, made of palladium, gives the memorial a unique sparkle, catching the sunlight and drawing attention to its message. Jan Bouchal Ghost Bike is more than a memorial. It is a testament to a life dedicated to making Prague a better place, a symbol of hope for a future where cyclists can safely navigate the city’s streets.
