Established in 1982 by the Franciscan Fathers, James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School stands proudly in the Downsview neighbourhood. This school isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the vision of Cardinal James Charles McGuigan, the Archbishop of Toronto from 1934 to 1971. The Franciscans saw a need for a Catholic school in the Keele-Finch community, and James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School was their answer. The school’s motto, “Deus Meus et Omnia” meaning “My God and My All,” reflects the deep-rooted Catholic values at its core. James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School began its journey with a simple structure. By 1984, a permanent building was constructed. The school expanded further in 1988, acquiring more land. Following the closure of Regina Pacis Catholic Secondary School in 2002, James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School saw its student body grow. A new west wing was added by 2008 to accommodate the increased enrolment. Today, James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School boasts a diverse range of programs. These include the Advanced Credit Experience (A.C.E.) partnership with York University, offering dual-credit opportunities for select grade 12 students. The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program allows students to specialize in fields like Transportation Technology, Arts and Culture, and Health and Wellness. The school also offers a unique STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). This program provides enriched academic routes and SHSM options for students interested in these fields. The campus itself is a blend of old and new. The original East Wing houses the majority of the classrooms, the automotive shop, and the historic St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi Chapel with its beautiful stained-glass windows. The modern West Wing boasts additional classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, a spacious administrative office, and a large cafeteria that doubles as an auditorium. In 2023, the school embarked on an athletic expansion. They added a state-of-the-art outdoor basketball court. This court features NBA-sized dimensions, glass backboards, spectator stands, and stadium-style lighting. James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School provides a wide range of athletic programs. Students can participate in everything from football and basketball to tennis, badminton, and even arm wrestling. This school is more than just an educational institution. It’s a community hub, fostering spiritual and intellectual growth, and equipping students with the skills they need to thrive.
