“So, here we are, standing before the Jáma Josef.” You might ask, “Why a mine shaft? What’s so special about this particular hole in the ground?” Well, Jáma Josef, a coal mine, gives us a glimpse into the history of mining in Petřkovice, a small town near Ostrava. Now, this mine is not just an abandoned pit – it’s a silent witness to a time when coal powered industry in the region. Back in the early 19th century, the local miners dug deep, searching for the precious black gold. Jáma Josef was part of a greater network of mines, all owned by a man named Johann Adam Grutschreiber. There was a special technique used for extracting the coal here – the mine shaft was actually dug against the slope of the layer of coal. Why? Because it was much easier and safer to extract the coal this way.
While Jáma Josef stood as a symbol of hard work and resourcefulness, it also played a vital role in the local community. This mine shaft helped to ventilate the nearby main tunnel. And this tunnel, known as a “stola,” was the heart of the entire mining operation.
However, as time went on, the coal seam, the layer where the miners extracted the coal, moved deeper and deeper underground. Jáma Josef lost its relevance. By the end of the first half of the 19th century, the mine shaft was no longer needed. They abandoned Jáma Josef. Today, all that remains of this once-vital mine shaft is a large, circular depression – kind of like a gigantic crater. It’s a reminder of the past, a testament to human ingenuity, and a testament to the relentless nature of time.
