Deep within the remnants of a forgotten industrial landscape lies Jíma Antonín IV. It’s not a glamorous palace or a towering cathedral. Jíma Antonín IV is a mineshaft, a scar upon the earth, a testament to a time of toil and industry. Now abandoned, it’s a place where nature slowly reclaims what man has left behind. Jíma Antonín IV sits at the end of a path strewn with debris. Discarded tires, remnants of vehicles, and other refuse litter the way, a stark contrast to the once bustling activity this place saw. Opened in 1943, Jíma Antonín IV, then known as Prago IV or Důl Josef, played a crucial role in the local coal industry. Its lifespan, however, was relatively short. Operations ceased in 1965, and the final liquidation occurred in 2004. Interestingly, Jíma Antonín IV carries the name of Antonín Zápotocký, the chairman of the Central Council of Trade Unions. This renaming took place in 1946. The mine’s history intertwines with the life of Czech writer Ota Pavel. During his youth, from 1944 until the end of World War II, Pavel toiled in the Prago mine. Although some records refer to this mine as “Důl Dunderka” in Dubí, historical documents confirm its actual location within the Vrapice cadastral area. Jíma Antonín IV offers a glimpse into a forgotten world. A world of hard labor, where men descended into the earth to extract the black gold that fueled industry. A world now silent, where the echoes of picks and shovels have faded, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the whisper of the wind.
