This Jak-40 with number 9840659 was built in 1979. It was constructed in Saratov at Plant No 292. This factory was known for Yakovlev aircraft. The plane was delivered to Poland later that year. It joined the 36th Special Air Transport Regiment in Warsaw.
In the 1990s, the Jak-40 received a new white and red paint scheme. By the early 2000s, most Polish Jak-40s were nearing the end of their operational lives. This created a problem for transporting VIPs. An immediate solution was needed.
A decision was made to repair four Jak-40 aircraft. This would extend their use for another five years. Aircraft nb 044, 045, 047, and 048 were chosen. The renovation began in Minsk, Belarus in 2007.
The repairs took longer than expected. The planes weren’t picked up until early 2008. After renovation, Jak-40 nb 044 could fly until 2012. It had a limit of 6000 flight hours. However the plane experienced many faults. In 2009, the decision was made to sell it.
No buyer was found. So, in 2011, the plane was given to the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. Today, the Jak-40 nb 44 is displayed in front of the museum’s main building.
