A 15-meter-high concrete pillar. That’s the Jahndenkmal. It stands tall and proud.

This is the Jahndenkmal in Cologne-Müngersdorf. Unveiled on July 21 1928 it celebrates the 150th birthday of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. The “Turnvater Jahn” or “father of gymnastics” was a significant figure. This monument is one of about 330 memorials to him in Germany.

The dedication ceremony was quite an event. Jahn’s great-grandson traveled all the way from Chicago. Oskar Berger the chairman of the German Gymnastics Association was also present. The Jahndenkmal itself is quite striking. A 15-meter-high reinforced concrete pillar. Four stylized Fs crown it forming a Turnerkreuz or turner’s cross. Each F stands for a word in the German Gymnastics Association’s motto: Frisch Fromm Fröhlich Frei. Fresh Devout Cheerful Free. Architect Adolf Abel designed it. He was Cologne’s city building director at the time. He also designed other notable Cologne structures.

The Jahndenkmal sits atop a hill. It’s on the south side of the Jahnwiese. This hill and the nearby Adenauerhügel were created from earth excavated for the Adenauerweiher pond. Initially the monument was easily visible. Tall trees now mostly obscure it.

A plaque was later added. It commemorates both the 1928 gymnastics festival and the 1949 German gymnastics championships. The plaque was even part of an exhibition at the German Sport & Olympic Museum in Cologne. A member of the German Gymnastics Federation later restored it. It was ceremoniously remounted in March 2012. So next time you see it remember its rich history. Remember the dedication ceremony. Remember the significance of Turnvater Jahn. The Jahndenkmal is more than just a monument. It’s a piece of Cologne’s history and a testament to the enduring spirit of gymnastics.
