On a crisp autumn afternoon in 2021, smoke billowed from Devil’s Peak, a sinister backdrop to the University of Cape Town. Our story centers on the Jagger Library, a place of quiet scholarship and rich history. The Jagger Library, also known as the Jagger Reading Room, stood as a vital hub of knowledge. It held a vast collection, a testament to centuries of learning.
The Jagger Library was built in the 1930s thanks to John William Jagger, a key benefactor to UCT. He understood the power of knowledge and the importance of preserving it. Originally the main library, it later housed the African Studies collection, a treasure trove of 70,000 volumes and 3,500 films. The collection spanned diverse topics, from gender studies and media to the complexities of African studies itself. Rare nineteenth and twentieth-century titles sat alongside contemporary works, creating a rich tapestry of knowledge.
The library went through phases of change. It served as a short-loan center and then as a temporary lending center. In the 1980s, it became the cornerstone of a library network at UCT, holding over half a million volumes. Yet, it never lost its core purpose: to provide a space for learning and discovery. A restoration project in 2011 aimed to bring the Jagger Library back to its original grandeur, stripping away later additions and restoring the original features.
The fire of April 2021 brought tragedy to the Jagger Library. The fire, which started on Table Mountain, spread rapidly. It consumed the Reading Room, gutting the roof and destroying galleries, offices, and stores. The African Studies collection, government publications, university calendars, and irreplaceable archival materials were lost. The fire also took a toll on rare books, manuscripts, and the library’s administrative records.
Yet, amidst the devastation, stories of resilience emerged. The library’s fire detection systems played a crucial role, saving a portion of the collection. The basement, housing a significant portion of the archives, survived thanks to fire doors. The salvage operation, a testament to the dedication of staff and volunteers, recovered materials from the water-damaged basement. The Jagger Library’s legacy lives on, reminding us of the fragility of knowledge and the importance of its preservation. The university remains committed to rebuilding this vital space, ensuring that the spirit of learning continues to thrive.
