Jackson-Reed High School

Stepping onto the grounds of Jackson-Reed High School, one can almost feel the weight of history and the echoes of students past. Jackson-Reed, formerly known as Woodrow Wilson High School, stands as a testament to change and progress. This change is not just in its name but also in its values. The school, founded in 1935, underwent a significant transformation in March 2022. The District of Columbia government officially renamed the school Jackson-Reed, honoring two remarkable educators: Edna Burke Jackson and Vincent Reed. This renaming marked a departure from the school’s previous namesake, President Woodrow Wilson, whose discriminatory policies clashed with the school’s diverse and inclusive environment. Edna Burke Jackson, the first African-American teacher at the school, broke barriers and inspired generations of students. Her legacy of tenacity and intellect is woven into the very fabric of Jackson-Reed. Vincent Reed, the school’s first Black principal, championed equity and fostered a more integrated community. He later served as the Superintendent of DCPS and even as assistant secretary of education under Ronald Reagan.
