Haven’t you wondered why Jackson Hollow Recreation Area is so special? It’s more than just a park. It holds stories of resilience and rebirth.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the 1950s and 60s. Jackson Hollow wasn’t always a preserve. David S Boger transformed it into a fishing and recreation club. He constructed an earthen dam to create a lake. Boger also built a flagstone pool by hand. A two-story lodge, bathrooms, and a snack bar completed the scene.

Doug Boger, David’s son, remembers growing up here. He was a lifeguard at the pool. His aunt, the swim instructor, taught him a memorable lesson. During a training exercise, she pretended to drown. Doug tried to rescue her. She then grabbed him from behind. He couldn’t free himself. In desperation, he grabbed her big toe and twisted it until she let go. The Boger family loved their pranks.

The Bogers stocked the lake with 5000 trout. Sadly, the water wasn’t suitable. The trout died quickly. They then restocked with bluegill, bass and other native species.

Hurricane Agnus in 1972 changed everything. The dam above Jackson Hollow broke. The campground was destroyed. The area lay dormant for years. But nature has a way of healing.

Today, Jackson Hollow is part of the Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve. It’s a living laboratory. It’s also an open-air museum. The Virginia Outdoors Foundation protects this land. They share its significance through managed access.

Jackson Hollow now plays a vital role in stream restoration. It’s a brook trout release site. The Trout in the Classroom program connects students with nature. They reintroduce native brook trout into Catharpin Creek. This is the same waterway that fed the lake long ago.

Catharpin Creek is now a suitable habitat. The headwaters are protected from development. Sandy Harrington, David Boger’s granddaughter, is on the school board. She witnessed the trout release.

Jackson Hollow’s story is one of transformation. It reminds us of nature’s power to reclaim and renew. It also reminds us of the importance of preserving our natural spaces. Today, Jackson Hollow Recreation Area thrives as a sanctuary. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. Its past now enriches its present.
