Behold the J C Smuts Statue a bronze giant in Cape Town’s Company’s Gardens. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a tribute to Jan Christian Smuts a remarkable South African. He was a general a statesman and twice Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.

Smuts’s life was one of action. He distinguished himself during the Second Boer War. He later held key international positions. He served as Minister of Defence during World War I. During World War II he aligned South Africa with Britain. In 1941 he became a British Field Marshal. Quite an achievement.

This particular statue wasn’t the first. There’s another one by Sydney Harpley. That statue near the National Art Gallery faced some controversy. This one sculpted by Ivan Mitford-Barberton in 1973 is more popular. Its more realistic depiction of Smuts seems to have found favour with the public.

The statue shows Smuts seated contemplatively. He holds his walking stick. It’s a fitting tribute to a man known for his love of hiking in the Table Mountain area. The statue stands 530 meters high. It’s a striking presence in the gardens. The inscription simply states JC Smuts 1870-1950.

Even this statue hasn’t been without its critics. Some see it as a symbol of white dominance in South Africa. This highlights the complexities of Smuts’s legacy. His achievements are undeniable but his historical role is still debated. The statue stands as a reminder of both his contributions and the controversies surrounding him. It invites us to contemplate public memory and the commemoration of historical figures. We stand before a man who left an indelible mark on South Africa and the world. A man whose story continues to be told. And retold.
