A bustling marketplace unfolds before you. This is Iwamotocho a district of Chiyoda Tokyo. Iwamotocho’s story is woven into the fabric of Edo period history.

Iwamotocho wasn’t always a vibrant center of commerce. In the early Edo period it was swampy and unsuitable for living. A cliff resembling a goose gave the area its name Iwamoto meaning “below the cliff”. Samurai later built estates there. Much of the land remained empty for fire prevention.

Iwamotocho’s transformation began in earnest. It became a hub for fabric and apparel. Hundreds of shops cater to retailers. Twice a year a family bazaar offers incredible discounts up to 70%.

The south of Iwamotocho contrasts sharply. It houses wholesale hardware stores a testament to its diverse economic history. Iwamotocho and its neighboring Kanda-Iwamotocho had a combined population of 1989 people in 2007. Showa-Dori Avenue separates them. Iwamotocho’s addressing system is modernized but Kanda-Iwamotocho’s isn’t.

Iwamotocho Station sits on the border between the two districts. Chiyoda Board of Education manages local schools. Children from parts of Iwamotocho and Kanda-Iwamotocho attend Chiyoda Elementary School. Others go to Izumi Elementary School. Junior high school choices are open.

Iwamotocho’s past echoes in its present. The district blends old and new a testament to its resilience and adaptability. It is a fascinating place a vibrant reflection of Tokyo’s rich history. Explore its streets and discover its hidden gems. Iwamotocho invites you to delve into its captivating past.
