“Dzieci Warszawy” echoes through time. We stand before the plaque commemorating IV Batalion 21 Warszawskiego PP Dzieci Warszawy. It is more than just a marker. It speaks of courage, resilience, and the spirit of Warsaw’s children.
The 21st Warsaw Infantry Regiment “Dzieci Warszawy” translates to Children of Warsaw. It was formed on November 11 1918. This regiment continued the traditions of Warsaw’s infantry. These traditions were inextricably linked to the capital’s fate. This was during the times of the Kościuszko Uprising and the November Uprising.
The soldiers of the 21st Warsaw Infantry Regiment proved their valor. They fought in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1920. They gained fame for their bravery in September 1939. They battled near Mława and defended Grochów and Saska Kępa. They held positions in Mokotów.
Even after the defeat in September, the regiment lived on. It was recreated in secrecy as the “Żaglowiec” group. It fought in the Warsaw Uprising in Żoliborz. The regiment suffered very heavy losses.
The 21st Warsaw Infantry Regiment “Dzieci Warszawy” had a distinguished history. Twenty-two soldiers were awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari. Almost 400 soldiers received the Cross of Valour.
In peacetime, the regiment trained soldiers. These soldiers later joined the Border Protection Corps battalion. In March 1939, Colonel Stanisław Sosabowski took command.
During the defense of Warsaw in September 1939, the 21st Infantry Regiment played a crucial role. On September 15, it occupied Grochów. Grochów was a key defense section on the Praga bridgehead. They effectively repelled attacks. They inflicted heavy losses on the invading forces. Two battalions fought valiantly in Mokotów and Czerniaków. The regiment’s total losses were about 1500 soldiers.
