The cool Itaquera granite beneath your feet whispers tales of a bygone era. This Itaquera we stand in today wasn’t always a bustling district. Itaquera’s story begins long ago near the Aldeia de São Miguel village. Early mentions of the “Roça Itaquera” date back to 1620. By the 18th century it was a neighborhood within São Miguel Paulista.

It wasn’t until 1920 that Itaquera became its own autonomous municipal district. Imagine the change. Itaquera grew from humble beginnings. Two large estates Fazenda Caguaçu and Sítio Caguaçu dominated the landscape in 1837. Fourteen years later these estates were subdivided. Homes sprung up alongside the Santa Ana church. This church gave birth to Vila Santana a key part of Itaquera’s development.

Companhia Pastoril e Agrícola played a pivotal role in shaping Itaquera. They developed Fazenda Caguaçu. Their land stretched between the Rio Jacu and Rio Aricanduva rivers. Today this area includes Vila Carmosina Colônia Japonesa Jardim do Carmo and Parque do Carmo. These names echo Itaquera’s diverse history.

Sítio Caguaçu was transformed into plots of 10,000 square meters. Prosperous individuals purchased these plots. They built country residences and vacation homes. This included local businessman Sabbado D’Angelo the Baumann family and politicians David Domingos Ferreira and Dr Alvaro de Mendonça.

Oscar Americano further shaped Itaquera’s landscape. He bought part of Fazenda Caguaçu. He created Vila Carmosina one of the first densely populated planned developments in eastern São Paulo. He also developed the less dense Colônia Japonesa. This period saw explosive population growth in Itaquera.

Modern Itaquera is a testament to significant public investment. Major highways crisscross the area. Avenida Jacu Pêssego Rua Augusto Carlos Baumann Avenida dos Campanellas and Rua Virginia Ferni are just a few examples. The São Paulo Metro Line 3 and CPTM Line 11 further connect Itaquera to the wider city.

Itaquera’s commercial and industrial sectors are also flourishing. Banks have established branches. A Poupatempo agency provides administrative services. The Shopping Metrô Itaquera sits near the Corinthians-Itaquera station. This station’s name is a tribute to the nearby Corinthians football club training ground. The club’s stadium hosted matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Itaquera’s impact is undeniable. Its legacy continues to shape São Paulo. The Planetário do Carmo a 200-seat planetarium stands as a testament to Itaquera’s growth. Obra Social Dom Bosco Itaquera offers valuable social services. This district thrives offering vocational training and employment opportunities. Itaquera’s journey from humble beginnings to a vibrant district demonstrates resilience and progress.
