“Imagine a vision turned into reality.” That’s the story of Isle of Patmos Baptist Church. This church stands as a testament to faith and determination.
Isle of Patmos Baptist Church began with a small group. In 1941 Reverend Hilliard S. Simenton founded a mission. It started with twenty-seven believers. The group followed the apostles’ teachings. They shared fellowship and prayers. The church grew quickly. It went from twenty-seven to forty-five members.
Reverend Simenton secured a storefront. It was at 311 15th Street, SE. He built the pews himself. He worked hard despite his illness. His dedication laid a strong foundation. Sadly, he passed away during the second anniversary celebration. His last words showed his devotion. He said the Lord would send a man.
For three years, the church had no pastor. Deacons and members prayed. They waited for the right leader. Deacon Tan Reed and Deacon William Brown kept the members together.
One day, Deacon Reed met Reverend George Bolden Rogers. This happened while fishing. Reverend Rogers preached at the church. The members liked him. They invited him back. Everyone knew he was the answer to their prayers.
Reverend Rogers became pastor in 1947. He started with fifteen members and 200 dollars. The church then moved from 15th Street, SE. The government needed the building for a school. The Seventh Day Adventist Church offered space. It was at Sixth and N Street, NW.
A year later, the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church bought its own building. It was at 308 G Street, SW. The price was 25000 dollars. But urban renewal forced another move.
In 1956, the church moved to 1519 U Street, NW. This cost 50000 dollars. Modifications added another 14000 dollars. By 1961 the mortgage was paid off.
The Isle of Patmos Baptist Church kept growing. Reverend Cleveland Bateast became assistant pastor in 1961. He served faithfully. He ministered to the youth. He also started the Baptist Training Union.
An early eight o’clock service began in 1963. After ten years on U Street, a larger space was needed. In 1966, the church moved to its current location. It is at 12th and Rhode Island Avenue, NE. The building cost 242500 dollars. A cornerstone was laid in 1967.
The Isle of Patmos Baptist Church then started a Day Care Center. This served the members and the community. The center opened in 1969.
Pastor Rogers envisioned an educational building. He launched a building fund drive in 1971. He also invested in IBM stock.
The Isle of Patmos has worshipped in every quadrant of the city. From this church, 52 members became licensed ministers. Seventeen went on to become pastors.
Early ministries included various boards, Sunday School, and choirs. There was also a Flower Club, a Pastor’s Aide Club, and Bible Study.
Pastor Rogers led the church for 41 years. He passed away in 1988. In 1990, Reverend Dr. Tyrone P. Jones, III, became the third pastor.
Pastor Jones started new ministries. These included the Marriage Fellowship and the Youth Department. In 1992, he unveiled “Vision 95”. This was a 1.1 million dollar building project.
In 1999, Reverend Dr. Calvin Leland Matthews became pastor-elect. He was installed in 2000 as the fourth pastor.
Pastor Matthews established a Family Sunday School Hour. He also started a Bible Institute. In 2006, he ordained the first three women ministers.
The Isle of Patmos Baptist Church stands strong today. It is a testament to vision, faith, and community. It has been richly blessed throughout its 75 years.
Isle of Patmos Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a living story of faith. It’s a beacon of hope. It’s a testament to unwavering community spirit.
