Imagine a time of uncertainty. It is 1967. Riots and water rationing plague Hong Kong. Yet, amidst this turmoil, Island School opens its doors.

Island School stands before you. It is more than just a school. It is a testament to Hong Kong’s resilience and evolution. Established in 1967, Island School was the first secondary school founded by the English Schools Foundation.

Initially named “Secondary school for British children,” Island School met the need for English-speaking education. Reverend Geoffrey Speak became the first principal. He introduced the House System. This system still provides pastoral care today.

The school first occupied a former British military hospital. It was located there from 1967 to 1972. Island School then settled permanently at 20 Borrett Road. This remained its home until 2017.

Principals like C. Ronald Rivers-Moore expanded extracurricular activities. These included the Nepal Trek and a school zoo. Jonty Driver added drama, photography, and computing to the curriculum. He also founded the Island School Evening Institute.

Colin Niven raised the school’s international profile. David James introduced the International Baccalaureate program. Michelle Hughes oversaw the transition to the IB program.

In 2017, Island School temporarily moved to Sha Tin for redevelopment. In August 2022, Island School returned to a brand-new campus on Borrett Road.

The new campus boasts modern facilities. These include a performing arts center and an indoor swimming pool. There is also a sports hall and sky gardens. The school also has a black box theatre.

Island School offers a comprehensive education. Students can pursue the IB Diploma Programme. They may choose an alternative BTEC program. The school also offers IGCSE courses.

Island School celebrates individuality and embraces responsibility. Over 1,200 students from diverse backgrounds attend. The Island School Student Council ensures student voices are heard.

Many notable figures have passed through Island School’s halls. Alumni include Alexandra Countess of Frederiksborg, and actor Richard Juan. Also Harry Hill attended Island School for two years. Fiona Sit and Olympic swimmers Annemarie Munk and Melanie Wilson are also alumni.

Island School has evolved. It has grown. It remains a vital part of Hong Kong’s educational landscape. From its humble beginnings to its modern campus, Island School continues to shape future generations. It prepares students for a global world.
