Consider this: a beacon of faith rising from Scarborough’s landscape. That’s the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. Established in 1969, it stands as one of Canada’s oldest and largest Islamic community centers.

Initially, the Islamic Foundation of Toronto began humbly. It occupied a 280-square-metre building on Rhodes Avenue. This small space served as a starting point.

Fast forward to 1984. The Foundation acquired a 9,300-square-metre site. This marked a significant turning point. The leadership envisioned more than just a mosque. They planned a multidimensional center to unite the Greater Toronto Area’s residents.

After overcoming a five-year court challenge to secure a building permit, the majestic three-story structure was completed in 1992. The local Muslim community funded almost the entire CA$6 million project. The result was stunning.

The building itself is a sight to behold. Constructed from white stone, it exudes serenity and strength. A 38-metre minaret graces the skyline. A copper-cladded dome adds an elegant touch. Together, they symbolize the Muslim presence in Canada.

Inside the Islamic Foundation of Toronto spans 4,900 square meters. Prayer halls accommodate both men and women. Twelve classrooms buzz with students. A cafeteria and kitchen offer nourishment. A gymnasium hosts events and activities. A library provides knowledge and resources. Even a mortuary is on-site to serve the community. Accessibility is a priority. Ramps, an elevator, and over 200 parking spaces ensure everyone feels welcome.

The Islamic Foundation of Toronto is easily accessible by car and public transit. It is open for all five daily prayers. During Friday prayers almost 2,000 worshippers gather. The full-time school educates over 600 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Evening and weekend Islamic classes host over 400 pupils. A full-time Hifz School and evening Hifz classes further enhance the educational offerings.

Adults can participate in daily programs. Classes range from Arabic to Fiqh. Youth find outlets in sports tournaments. Drop-in sports are available for both brothers and sisters.

A seven-member Majlis governs the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. An elected Board of Trustees holds the property title. They also advise the Majlis. This ensures accountability. Audited accounts are published yearly. Books and meetings are open to members.

The Islamic Foundation of Toronto experienced challenges too. In 2017 the high school portion abruptly closed. This affected over 100 students. In 2020, facilities closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the Foundation adapted. It promoted vaccine uptake. Influencers and community leaders helped.

Today the Islamic Foundation of Toronto continues to thrive. It offers diverse programs. These programs serve the community’s needs. It remains a vital hub. It unites residents. It fosters Islamic values. Remember its story as you pass by this cornerstone of faith.
