Imagine stepping back in time to the year 975. This is Irsch. A significant moment is recorded in a document by Kaiser Otto II. He gifted Irsch together with Korlingen and Hockweiler to the Kloster St. Martin in Trier. It was granted for eternal use.

Centuries passed. In 1218, the chapel in Irsch was granted parish rights. This elevated its religious importance. The monks of St. Martin Abbey played a pivotal role in Irsch for over 800 years. They provided spiritual care and administered justice. They managed lands and educated the children. The “Irscher Burg” still stands today. It once served as the administration building for these spiritual leaders.

The rule of the St. Martin Abbey in Irsch ended during Napoleon’s era. The monastery was dissolved. Irsch then became an independent municipality for nearly 200 years. Agriculture dominated its economy.

Tragedy struck on May 11, 1944. An American bomber crashed near Irsch. Seven bodies were recovered from the woods between Filsch and Irsch. They were buried in the Irsch cemetery. Two crew members parachuted to safety but were captured. Heavy artillery fire damaged several buildings in Irsch. This happened when US troops advanced to conquer Trier in late February 1945.

A new chapter began in 1968 for Irsch. The Alwitra company settled near Filscher Wäldchen. This event shaped the town’s economic future. Irsch was incorporated into Trier just a year later in 1969.

Today, Irsch is a part of Trier. It holds a rich history spanning centuries. From its early days under Kaiser Otto II to its modern integration, Irsch maintains its unique character. It is a place where echoes of the past resonate with the present. You are now standing in a location steeped in time. Irsch has witnessed power shifts and rebirth.
