The history of Instituto Federal de S\u00e3o Paulo is linked to the history of IFSP itself. It was the first school in this educational system. Established in 1909 by President Nilo Pe\u00e7anha it aimed to provide primary vocational education. Each state capital would house an “School of Art and Crafts Apprentices”.
Classes began in 1910. The school initially operated from a warehouse. This warehouse was located on Avenida Tiradentes in the Luz neighborhood. Later that year it moved to Santa Cec\u00edlia. It remained there until its final move in 1976.
Early courses included turning mechanics and electricity. Carpentry and decorative arts workshops were also offered. The student body consisted of nearly one hundred apprentices.
Over the years the school underwent several name changes. In 1965 it became the Federal Technical School of S\u00e3o Paulo. In 1999 it was renamed the Federal Center for Technological Education of S\u00e3o Paulo.
As a Cefet-SP the institution expanded. It began offering higher education courses at the S\u00e3o Paulo headquarters. Between 2000 and 2008 many technology courses were introduced. Licentiate degrees and engineering programs followed.
In late 2008 Cefet-SP became the Instituto Federal de Educa\u00e7\u00e3o. It also became known as Ci\u00eancia e Tecnologia de S\u00e3o Paulo IFSP. The old headquarters became a campus. It is the largest IFSP campus. The school offers training at different levels. Courses range from high school technical to undergraduate degrees. There are also graduate programs.
