Can numbers whisper secrets? Here at the Instituto de Matemática e Estatística, they certainly seem to. This institute, part of the prestigious University of São Paulo, isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the power of numbers, a place where mathematical theories are explored and statistical wonders are unveiled. The Instituto de Matemática e Estatística, often called IME-USP, began its life in 1970. Before that, math studies were scattered, primarily housed at the Polytechnic School. The university reform brought these scattered departments together under one roof, creating the IME-USP. The institute combined mathematics, statistics, and computer science professors from across the university. They came from places like the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, and even the Institute of Mathematical Research. Interestingly, the IME-USP’s coat of arms features Archimedes, the Greek mathematician, physicist, and inventor. A fitting tribute to the spirit of inquiry that drives this place. The institute initially occupied only Block A, which housed faculty offices, administration, the library, and support services. Classrooms were planned for Block B, but until its construction, students continued their studies at the old Rector’s building, a short walk away. This meant professors were constantly shuttling between the two locations. Imagine the mathematical discussions happening en route! The various departments, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics, finally moved into their new home in 1974. By then, the institute offered bachelor’s programs, started in 1970 for Mathematics and 1972 for Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Postgraduate programs were also up and running. The Department of Computer Science, initially part of Applied Mathematics, became its own entity in 1987 and resides in Block C. The IME-USP also houses the Center for Free Software Competency and the Center for Research Support in Stochastic Modeling and Complexity. The Instituto de Matemática e Estatística holds a high ranking in Latin America, recognized for its excellence in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. The institute even has its own publication, the São Paulo Journal of Mathematical Sciences, continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the Reviews of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics. So, next time you hear a number whispered, remember the Instituto de Matemática e Estatística, where numbers speak volumes.
